Visionaries
REV. SAMUEL S. ALLNUTT
He served as the first Principal of the College from 1881-1899, and was also the founder of St. Stephen’s. He taught Logic and Literature at college. On Founder’s Day, 7th December every year, we commemorate the death anniversary of Revd. Samuel S. Allnutt.
REV. J.W.T. WRIGHT
Principal of St. Stephen’s College from 1899-1902. Amongst other aspects, Rev. Wright is fondly remembered for having laid the foundation for the Shakespeare Society of College and also played a crucial role in acquiring playing fields for junior members.
REV. G. HIBBERT WARE
The third Principal of college from 1902-1906. He was a keen footballer and the number of junior members in College saw a sharp increase under his tenure. Revd. Ware along with later Principal Rudra established the college Residences.
SUSHIL KUMAR RUDRA
He was the fourth Principal of the College and the first Indian Principal from 1906-1923. Having taught Economics, Logic and Literature at St. Stephen's Principal Rudra was also a close associate of Mahatma Gandhi, as also one of the founding members of the Modern School.
F. F. MONK
Served as Principal of the college from 1923-1926 as Principal in the interim when Professor SN Mukarji went to Oxford. He was the first President of the Committee of Games and also contributed significantly in writing the history of St. Stephen’s College.
RAI BAHADUR S.N. MUKARJI
He taught in college from 1912-1945 and was the Principal from 1926-1945. The prestigious Mukarji Memorial Debate was named after Principal Mukarji as also two of the current blocks for gentlemen in the Residence. He is also credited with the efforts to setting up the University of Delhi.
D. RAJARAM
He was the first old student of college to become the Principal, a position he held from 1945-1960. He taught Philosophy and was in charge of games, which is why his car, affectionately called “Mrs. Noah” used to ferry staff members to Kashmere Gate to watch cricket matches of the college.
S.C. SIRCAR
The second “old student” to become the Principal and held the position from 1960-1972. He was also part of the Republic Day contingent of St. Stephen’s that marched in the parade during his tenure.
REV. W. S. RAJPAL
Rev Rajpal was the Principal from 1972-1984 and the Inter and Intra Rajpal theater competitions of the Shakespeare Society are in his honor.
DR. R. J. H. HALA
He was the Principal of the College from 1984-1991. The extension of the Library was put up during his term.
DR. ANIL WILSON
He served as the Principal from 1991-2008 and taught in the Department of English during the time. He was nominated by the President of India to the Executive Committee of the North Eastern Hill University (Shillong) and for a brief period was the Pro-Vice Chancellor of HP University.
REV. DR. VALSON THAMPU
He was the Principal of the College from 2008-2016. He was also a member of the National Minorities Commission.
