A Note
My dear respected Alumni,
Welcome to the St Stephen’s College Alumni Website!
As India celebrates 75 years of independence, my personal greetings to you!
As you know, St Stephen’s College played a stellar role in India’s freedom movement.
Our 4th Principal, Prof S.K.Rudra (Principal from 1906 to 1923), became the first Indian to head our College. In 1906, the 3rd Principal Prof H.Hibbert Ware (Principal from 1902 to 1906), gave up his post in favour of Prof S.K.Rudra. What a terrific gesture!
Mahatma Gandhi and Principal Rudra were close friends. Gandhiji visited Principal Rudra frequently and stayed at his house. Many historical decisions were taken by Gandhiji while staying with Principal Rudra.
Deenabandhu (friend of the poor, the name given by Mahatma Gandhi) Charles Freer Andrews, a faculty member of our College (1904 to 1914), was an active member of India’s freedom movement. It was C.F.Andrews, who brought Principal Rudra, Tagore, Gandhiji, and Sarojini Naidu together. It is believed that the seeds of the Quit India movement were sown by these stalwarts together. Interestingly, Tagore visited Principal Rudra’s house in 1916, and it was here that he translated “Gitanjali” in English that won him the Nobel Prize. Such is the legacy of our College! From the legendary Principal Rev. Samuel Scott Allnutt, the founding Principal, with 3 teachers and 5 students in a small house in Chandni Chowk, St Stephen’s College today, in the 142nd year, has the 13th Principal, Prof John Varghese (from 2016), another great visionary in the field of education. Each Principal and every faculty member has contributed to the glory of our College. Our alumni are the best, I dare say. We, in the Alumni Association, have been contributing towards strengthening bonds amongst the alumni. We have different chapters in different parts of India, and abroad. Please join in our endeavour to contribute to the activities of the alumni in whatever manner you possibly can. We hold seminars, group discussions, lectures, and friendly gatherings with lunch/dinner. Our London chapter recently held an excellent gathering.
Our core committee, under the inspiring leadership of our President, Mr.Phillip Mathew, has been meeting periodically to further give a fillip to the activities of the Alumni Association. The cordial meetings reflect the commitment of our core committee members. Our dream is to unite all Stephanians, not only in India but in different parts of the world, to spread the ultimate message: life is evanescent; let’s strengthen our bond and live life intensely to bring joy and inspiration all around!
Kindly contact Ms Ann Susan Aleyas, the ever-efficient faculty coordinator of our Alumni Association office, and revive memories!
My deep personal regards and best wishes.

A Note
On this special occasion I would like to share my happiness with the St. Stephen’s College alumni in the remarkable achievements of our alumni over the years in their respective fields in government, the private sector, academia and civil society both in India and abroad. It is well known that our alumni continue to serve at very senior levels in international organizations, as CEOs of leading multinational corporations, as professors in several of the leading universities of the world and as cabinet ministers in government. It is less well known that a Stephanian family of father and daughter have also planted the Tricolour at the peak of mount Everest. Remarkable achievements across the board. It is my hope that we will continue to maintain our high standards of probity and strong commitment ethical values. These values will help us navigate our way through challenging times as we launch ourselves into 2023 and beyond.

St. Stephen’s College is an extended family spread out to different corners of the world. In recent times, this family has developed stronger bonds through digital technology. When Stephanians are unable to meet, they communicate through social networking platforms and remember the good old days. The launch of the New Alumni Website on the 7th of January 2023 is a great emotional landmark to connect Stephanians living in different parts of the world. We are honoured to be an eyewitness to this great event. Come all ye Stephanians to spread fellow feeling and take the College to greater heights in the coming years.
Since I left College in the 1990s, my frequent interactions with Stephanians across the world have given me strength to go ahead in life. The completion of thirty years of partnership between St Stephen’s College and Soka University in 2022 gave me immense joy. Last year when I visited St Stephen’s College, I was able to meet many dear friends who gave me immense encouragement to live my life with vigor and joy. I could also visit the College Cafe and Allnutt North and feel the gentle breeze from the trees and the hubbub of excited conversation. An interaction with nature and people opened a storehouse of memories. Thank you Stephanians.

My dearest esteemed Alumni,
A warm welcome to the St Stephen’s College Alumni Website! It is a dream come true for every Stephanian and would indeed take the College to greater heights. I am sure that the Alumni Website would help unite Stephanians across the globe and spread the ethos of Stephania at a faster pace.
For me, “The College” is my second mother as the golden moments of my life were spent in its cradle. I still feel that being admitted to college was the biggest achievement of my life that brought me everlasting joy.
As a part of the Core Committee, I urge all the fellow Alumni to walk an extra mile for every Stephanian in need. We should help connect various Societies like Incubation Club, Leadership Society, Civil Services Forum, Cine Club etc and their potential future leaders and artists with external philanthropists for the purpose of funding. We also need to pool in more resources to further improve the infrastructure as well as sponsorship aids such as Scholarships for the needy students. I am hopeful that with the Alumni Website, We the Alumni of “the Best College of All” shall bring laurels to the august Alumni fraternity strengthening camaraderie.
Ad Dei Gloriam!
Jai Hind!

A Note
I had the pleasure and privilege of spending three wonderful years at St.Stephen’s College as a resident member. These three years were extremely enriching, and to a very large extent, shaped me into the person that I am today.
I had the honour to Captain the College Cross-Country team in 1983, and also represent the College at various Track and Field and Cross-Country championships. This helped me earn the College colours for both these sporting activities. The college has, since 1981, been an integral part of me; more so for the past three years since I have been a part of the College Alumni board. I feel the bond is a lot stronger and I couldn’t have asked for anything better than to remain connected with an institution that is so dear to me.
Like fellow Alumni Board members, I represent all Stephanians, however, to a larger extent, I proudly represent Stephanians from the ‘80s. I would like to see Alumni members all over the world reconnect with the college by way of regional or global Stephanian chapters. Stephanians in the Oceania region are requested to connect with me so that we can have an Oceania region chapter. This will enable us to widen our network, and remain updated with College happenings and events. The connections would go a long way in building ties with the current junior members in college.
The College is experiencing significant growth and is looking at providing the best learning opportunities to students. The college Alumni Board welcomes monetary contributions to help the college achieve the goals it has envisaged for itself and strives to continue nurturing the very best intelligentsia.

A Note
St. Stephen’s College was the institution I was admitted into, without any conditions. I scored the requisite marks and cleared the interview, that was it, and I was in! The very experience of securing admission to the college left an impression on me about the college’s uniqueness. The staff members provided me with a caring ambience to explore new ideas and it instantaneously made me feel that this is where I belong. From spending the leisure hours of my first break distilling aromatic ingredients from the many flowers on campus (I would like to admit that setting up a homemade distillation kit in residence was not entirely approved), immersing myself in the Stephanian ways of electioneering, to serving as the chancellor of the exchequer alongside the President to bring tangible changes to life on campus, it all brought everlasting joy. I would also like to mention that the installation of a big screen Akai TV in the Junior Combination Room earned me the infamous title of ‘Lord of the JCR’ at Grad Dinner! Post my graduation, I moved abroad to pursue higher studies. A detour to Imphal, often with family, became a practice, for it was lovely to bump into senior members and gyps from college.
As I established the MaolKeki Foundation, one of the first projects I undertook was the setting up of the MaolKeki Memorial Scholarship in College. I was moved by the inconvenience faced by junior members and senior members in paying their tuition and accommodation fees, whilst in college during the pandemic. My room baap, as I fondly call him, and I, initiated a fundraising campaign that secured commitment close to Rs. 30 lakhs from alumni around the world.
Now that I look ahead, in my capacity as an alumnus and as a member of the Alumni Advisory Board, I acknowledge the upgradation of existing infrastructure as the College’s immediate need. For instance, the (walls of) Assembly Hall, a place visited by each Stephanian to seek food for thought to begin the day with, is in need of repair.
I would like to use this opportunity to urge alumni across the world to reflect back and reminisce about the time they spent in college, while also reciprocating the contribution of the college to their lives by giving back in whatever capacity feasible for them.
Mr. Akash Mohapatra

Beyond his bank and industry commitments, Akash is also a champion for community causes, both in and outside the bank. He chairs a charity called the Mental Health Film Festival (Singapore), and is an ambassador for Caring for Life, besides serving on the Advisory board of Parivaar Education Society.
He enjoys trekking, yoga and photography in his leisure time. He lives in Singapore with his wife, Manali and son, Aaman, who is now serving National Service in the Singapore Army.
A Note
The five years in College from 1986 to 1991 were some of the best years of my life, and the time when I made some of my best friends for life!! I fondly remember my interview with Hala Saab, KRC, Malhan Saab, and VC, and the excitement when I saw my name on the list. I shall refrain from penning down the numerous pranks we pulled in college, that is for face-to-face banter after a couple of drinks. But the college was our home and the friends, the gyps, the office staff, and faculty were our family! During festivities we would throng to Arya Saab’s and other faculty members’ homes for some awesome delicacies which would be waiting for us. Of course we would be soaked in the remnants of the Holi ‘Mud Pit’ and intoxicated with a delicious drink of milk, various dry fruits and some other natural herbal ingredients!
My vision for our college alumni body is to foster a strong and enduring connection between the college and its alumni, and support the success and well-being of both- current students and alumni. Below are some of the key areas for us to focus on:
Promoting the interests and values of College
Facilitating networking and professional development opportunities for alumni around the world
Helping set up a vibrant alumni office that is actively engaged with alumni around the world.
Providing support for current students, through mentorship, scholarship programs and internships
Advocating for the college and supporting its fundraising efforts
Support college in bringing international best practices in relation to course offerings, curriculum, placements, alumni engagement etc

He left for the USA in 1992 to pursue a Ph. D in Economics at Columbia University in New York. Since 2010, he has been a full-time professor in the Department of Economics at UC-Irvine.
His research interest lies in the fields of International Trade and Economic Development. In addition to publishing peer reviewed articles in economics journals, he has written an undergraduate textbook in International Trade. He also serves on the editorial board of several journals.
A Note
Some of my best memories from college days are those surrounding college elections. My very close friend was running for President, and we campaigned very hard for his victory. Given the ranked choice voting that college used for elections, we struck an informal deal with a candidate who was likely to finish third to swap our second choice votes. This ended up giving us a large margin of victory. Following the college tradition in those days, we celebrated the victory at the iconic Machan in Taj Mansingh where the celebrations went on till the wee hours of early morning. Later, I also successfully organized the college festival ‘Harmony’ in my capacity as the chief coordinator.
My aim in the core committee is to keep the alumni engaged with college so that they can contribute financially to the development projects and serve as role models for current students. More importantly, as the cost of attending college has increased significantly over time (particularly for students coming from outside Delhi who have to pay for boarding and lodging), it is important to have a pot of money to provide financial assistance to students from less privileged backgrounds. This will go a long way in making the college accessible to students from less privileged backgrounds. I would be in favor of setting up a scholarship fund for this purpose, to which alumni can contribute generously.
Mr. Naveed Ali Ahmed
Bio
Naveed Ahmed grew up in Shillong (now in Meghalaya) and studied in St Edmund’s College. After his ISC (where he secured a state scholarship for coming 2nd in the state of Assam) he joined St Stephen’s College, where his father, two uncles, an aunt and subsequently his brother and cousins also studied. In 1966 he joined BSc Maths (Hons) and was in residence in Rudra North.
After college, he recognised that computing, which was in its infancy, was likely to take off as a potential career and decided to go to the UK and took up a course in Computer Studies. In 1974 he joined the Cranfield Institute of Technology (now Cranfield University) and completed his MSc in Management Studies. Following a short spell as a Research Associate at the Cranfield School of Management, Naveed joined Tesco Stores Ltd.
Naveed spent the next 33 years working for Tesco Stores Ltd in a variety of Head Office based management roles ranging from Marketing, Buying, IT, Finance, Property, Programme and Change Management. Amongst his key achievements was to develop Management Information systems for Commercial, Finance and Retail management. He was also part of the team that set up the Tesco Service Centre in Bangalore in 2004 for “back office” processing and IT development for all of Tesco’s UK and International operations.
Following Naveed’s retirement in 2010, he decided to use his knowledge and skills for the charity and not for profit sector. He recognised the wonderful work many of the charities did for their communities and felt that he could support their senior management and boards to be more effective in their marketing and business strategy. He is now a volunteer consultant and mentor working with the Cranfield Trust and has successfully completed over a dozen assignments for diverse charities. He is also the Chairman of a charity that provides day care and other services to elderly people in North London.
Naveed loves travelling, reading, watching most sports, is still involved with his local cricket club and regularly tries to improve his golf handicap.
A Note
I am delighted to have been appointed the UK representative of our Alumni Association. As I start researching and compiling the list of Alumni in the UK, I am pleasantly surprised to find out the large number we have living here from the 1960’s to recent graduates and those conducting post graduate studies in the UK. Although some have retired following distinguished careers, there are many who are in diverse professions ranging from Academia, Banking, IT, Business, Journalism etc.
It will be one of my challenges to connect with as many of our Alumni in the UK, help organising social and networking activities and ensure that we are there to support our Alumni as part of an extended family. I do hope that all our UK Alumni also look out for fellow Alumni should they ever need any help or guidance.
St Stephen’s was for me a place where I grew up to be an adult, built lifelong friendships, shaped my thinking and enjoyed the carefree comradeship of my contemporaries. Let our Alumni be an extension of that mindset.

A Note
My fondest college memories are undoubtedly the ones when our professors would take us to the lawn behind the Dining Hall to deliver their lectures in the crisp Delhi winter mornings and afternoons…Nothing felt better.
Another cherished memory is the time I spent at the Chapel. I was a soprano in the College Choir, and I remember singing “Issay, Issay”- a mellifluous Ethiopian Christmas song. The regular Chapel students had initiated a Christmas concert named “Mistletoe” for which we did everything, from drafting posters, chalking out the sequence, to getting sponsorships, inviting performances from other colleges and so much more! I am unsure if this event exists anymore, but we had the time of our lives planning and executing it.
Sitting in this whirlwind of nostalgia, I simply cannot resist talking about the “Harmony” Fest. What an insane amount of fun and frolic that was! The zany t-shirts, the mind-boggling competitions, the delectable food, the stunning rock bands, the exhilarating karaoke performances, the energetic street plays – ALL OF IT. Unadulterated Stephania!
While there are tomes to write on learning and experiences at St. Stephen’s College, my final nostalgic nugget is my room, my haven – O-1, in Rud South. Ours was the first batch in which girls were allotted residence in Rudra South, and every moment spent there was sheer bliss.
